Slogans
Alcoholics Anonymous has several slogans that are useful reminders of deep spiritual principles. Since they are simple and accessible, they are often among the first tools used by newcomers. But they are also available to anyone, anytime as a direct reminder of the spiritual dimension of life. Some slogans are:
First Things First
Easy Does It
One Day At A Time
But For the Grace of God
Think, Think, Think
This Too Shall Pass
Time Takes Time
Live and Let Live
Let Go and Let God
H.A.L.T
These can give pause for thought of higher things, or be repeated over and over like a mantra, essentially bludgeoning consciousness into a new thought path.
First Things First
This is a simple reminder to pay attention to our priorities. Yes, the daily distractions of life may seem endless and overwhelming, but, in the end they are just distractions. We need to remember what is most important to us and pay some attention in that direction.
Easy Does It
This is a reminder that what we are seeking is a more natural way of life, that by letting go and not trying to run the whole show ourselves, life can become simpler, easier. If I'm trying too hard, it may be because I'm trying to force my will - or my idea of how the world should be run - onto life. Sometimes seen as "Easy Does It - But DO It", as a reminder that this is not an excuse to slack off or do nothing.
One Day At A Time
As described on the ODAT page, this slogan is a reminder that life is occurring NOW and worrying about tomorrow or re-hashing the past is missing the now. It also tells us to focus our energy on this day - what is it that needs to be done now?
But for the Grace of God
Again a re-minder in the direction of Gratitude. How many times have I seen someone in worse shape than I am as a result of some poor choices - choices that I myself have made? If I start to think about what I have done to deserve this better outcome I generally see that - although I have done some basic level of effort - what I put in is much less than what I got out.
Think, Think, Think
Reminds alcoholics to "think the drink through", that is to consider all the consequences of getting drunk, remember the other times when drinking lead to humiliation, loss, tragedy.
This Too, Shall Pass
Typically thought of when someone is having a hard time with something, it is also applicable when someone is on a "pink cloud" and thinks that nothing can touch them now. The slogan reminds us that we do not know what the future holds for us, whatever we think is going to happen - the end of the world or perfect happiness - is only a limited view of a large, unpredictable range of possibilities.
